Illustrated Sgraffito Plate Adult workshop Sunday 17th July 2:30pm - 5pm
This is 2 ½ to 3 hour workshop, where you will learn a traditional and beautiful decorating technique known as ‘Sgraffito’ an Italian word meaning scratching or carving away.
In this workshop you will learn how to hand build your own plate using a hump mould, where you will apply a black underglaze so you have a dark and white contrast for your plate.
It’s helpful to google ‘scraffito plate’ to give you a few ideas; paying attention to contrasting colours of dark and light, thin and thick lines to make up a good composition. Mono Lino Printing may also provide similar inspiration. It helps if you can bring some ideas or sketches so we can use tracing paper to help transfer your design on to your plate, so it saves time to come with some ideas.
You will have a chance to practise carving on a small prepared tile that you will make to get an idea of which tools work best for you.
Once you have completed your plate, this will need to dry before its first firing and then will be dipped into a clear glaze in preparation for its second firing. So it will take 2-3 weeks before it will be ready!
People work at different rates so once your design is finished you are free to leave, as 2-3 hours is an approximate time scale to work to!
